Case reported in “The Straits Times” 19/8/2013
In recent years there has been an increase in troubled teenagers who become easy targets for drug traffickers in Singapore. These traffickers would get them hooked on drugs before pushing them to peddle illegal substances to other teens. Some traffickers even offer drugs free to teenagers in order to get them addicted.
While no official statistics on troubled teens turned runners are available, Singapore Criminal Lawyer Gloria James mentioned that she has seen many such cases through e-mail blast to lawyers from the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme, which gets lawyers to take up cases pro bono.
Ms James noted that it was like a trap laid out to entice teenagers.
