< 1 min read
Reported in The Straits Times, 3 April 2019

Our client, a former IT engineer with the Defence Science and Technology Agency, had been caught taking an upskirt video on an escalator at an MRT station.

After he was arrested, he was found to have targeted more than 50 women between December 2016 and June 2017. He faced seven counts of intending to insult the modesty of a woman, with 52 charges taken into consideration.

Prosecution asked for six months’ jail, stating that there were several aggravating factors. These included the manner of how the offences were committed on public transport and how he used the same modus operandi on each of his victims.

In their mitigation plea, GJC Lawyers, Gloria James-Civetta and Beverly Lim, stated that their client had completed his Master of Science in Information Systems programme at NTU in May last year.

Ms Beverly Lim added that her client who had voyeuristic disorder and suffering from mild depression at the time of the offences was “deeply remorseful” and “regreted having succumbed to those moments of temptation”.

She further added that he had an unblemished record at school, work and national service and that he is also currently undergoing rehabilitative sessions with a psychotherapist.

SENTENCE:

For each count of insulting a woman’s modesty, our client could have been jailed for up to a year and fined. He was jailed for 22 weeks after pleading guilty to seven counts of insulting a woman’s modesty. Another 52 similar charges were considered during sentencing.
