Reported by the Channel News Asia on 06th March 2025

In a recent case reported by Channel NewsAsia on March 6, 2025, a Singapore permanent resident, Noorwahidah Johari, was sentenced to four weeks’ imprisonment for abusing her domestic helper, Ms. Putri Rizki Amelia. The abuses included pouring soy sauce over Ms. Amelia’s head, throwing chili at her, and twisting her ear.

Ms. Noelle Teoh, an associate lawyer at Gloria James-Civetta & Co, represented Noorwahidah. In her defence, Ms Teoh highlighted that the incidents were brief and did not involve direct physical contact, resulting in no lasting injuries to the victim.

She explained that Noorwahidah’s actions stemmed from frustration over the helper’s work performance and her perceived non-compliance with instructions. Ms Teoh emphasised that her client deeply regretted her actions, noting that they were out of character. She also pointed out that Noorwahidah’s young children and elderly parents depend on her, and a lengthy prison sentence would adversely affect them.

Ms. Teoh’s role in this case underscores her commitment to providing dedicated legal representation. She ensured that her client’s perspective was thoroughly presented during the proceedings.
